Brand new film now in production

UPDATE - South Australian Outback Adventure the film series is now complete and available - Click here

This week we're excited to announce that planning for our next trip and film is well underway.

Since we released The Big Lap we've had heaps of people ask us . . . "so when is the next one?" - and now the time has come.

We're going to be heading deep into the South Australian Outback and exploring a lot of places that we didn't get to in The Big Lap.

The Flinders Ranges, Gammon Ranges, Oodnadatta Track, Lake Eyre, Strzelecki Track, Coober Pedy, Mt Dare, Birdsville, Innamincka and crossing the Simpson Desert are all part of the plan.

Crossing the Simpson Desert has long been on our bucket list and 2017 is the year that we'll be ticking that one off and you'll be coming with us when you watch the film we're making about the adventure.

And the good news is that we're leaving in 1 weeks time and we'll be shooting and editing as we go so you'll be able to see the finished film soon after we get back.

As with any adventure like this you start with a plan and then see what happens along the way but rest assured if things go wrong or the weather causes us to detour or anything else happens, it will all become part of the story and we'll share it with you in the film.

We can't wait!

South Australian Outback Adventure will be 2 x 50 3 x 60 minute episodes so there will be plenty to watch.

Watch it online or on DVD

South Australian Outback Adventure is not the only announcement we're making this week . . .

If we've been a bit quiet lately it's only because we've been flat out finishing building our new Members Hub which we launched this week as well.

The Members Hub is a brand new section of our website where you'll find all of our best content all together in one place making it easy to find and access.

Our free downloads like the Big Lap Budget Spreadsheet & others are there and new one's we create will go there as well.

But the great news is that our films are also now available to watch online in the Members Hub.

This is a major leap forward for Expedition Australia and one that's been in the planning stage for the best part of 2 years.

While we don't expect DVD's to go away any time soon, there's no doubt that we're all seeing a steady shift towards streaming films rather than buying them on physical media like DVD's & Blurays.

By creating this new online 'channel' through our Members Hub we now have the scope to deliver our films to you online faster and at a lower price than DVD or Bluray.

It also opens up the option for us to create 'online only' films that don't go to DVD at all. This makes it possible for us to make more 'niche' films that might only have a small audience but if we aren't having to buy, manage, warehouse, sell & post several thousand DVD's to make it financially viable then a lot of films that might never have made it to production suddenly become possible.

Exciting times!

You can subscribe to watch The Big Lap Series and Discovering Lake Argyle online today and South Australian Outback Adventure will be in there soon along with the new films we have in development (and we have plenty more in the pipeline).

Planning the trip

Planning is a big part of a trip like this, especially when you're making a film as well.

This is a road trip, not a 'go somewhere and camp' trip and we'll probably be somewhere different almost every night of the trip.

With only 3 weeks up our sleeve we're focussed on squeezing as much in as we possibly can so we've been pouring over the books and maps in the photo below to get as much info as we can.

It turns out the the entire trip north of Port Pirie fits on the Hema Great Desert Tracks Eastern Sheet Map which is handy - this map is part of the set of 4 in the Hema Great Desert Tracks Map Pack.

We're also using the Westprint Simpson Desert Trip Planning Map and the Simpson Desert Travellers Guide.

As well as the Hema Great Desert Tracks Atlas & Guide.

For the Flinders & Gammon Ranges section at the beginning we're using Ron & Viv Moon's Flinders Ranges Adventurers Guide and the Hema Flinders Ranges Map which are both packed with info.

Of course there's duplicate info in all of these books & maps but I find it's worth getting a few different perspectives and they all bring their own value to the planning table.

These maps and books are all available in our Online Shop.

We're leaving the camper trailer behind

We love our camper trailer and use it often but for this trip we're leaving it behind.

If you've been following along with #Project80 for the past few months, we've been on a mission to repair, restore and upgrade our 25 year old 80 Series Landcruiser to be the ultimate $20,000 family touring 4WD.

I snapped this photo in the Grampians where we went for a quick 'shake down' camping trip last weekend.

Plenty of progress has been made and there is still along list of things to do before we hit the road to the South Australian Outback but not everything on our#Project80 to do list will be completed before we go.

Not to worry though, we'll get back onto it after the trip and keep you posted with more #Project80 updates when we get there.

One of the drawbacks of travelling with a camper trailer is that they can take a long time to setup and pack up - if you've seen The Big Lap Series you'll know it took us a ridiculous 4 hours to pack up our first camp at Bright, VIC.

By the end of the 16 month trip we'd knocked that down significantly but we were still looking at the best part of an hour to pack up camp.

On our South Australian Outback Adventure we'll most likely be moving camp every day with only one or two exceptions so speed to setup and pack up are important.

To help achieve this we'll be thinking like 'backpackers' and travelling super light with the bare minimum of gear to get the job done (I'll give you a run down of our rig and gear in the film).

It's also not recommended to tow trailers across the Simpson Desert but even if it were ok, we'd still be leaving it behind.

We'll all be in our swags when the weather is good and we're also taking our Oz Tent RV5 which we can use as well, especially if the weather is not so good. Either way it makes for a quick and easy camp setup and packup.

I've also put a fair amount of work into getting the rear storage area setup with drawers and built in things so that there is minimal need to pull everything out every time we stop.

This trip will be the chance for us to put it all through its paces and then we'll adjust it as we need to before the next trip.

When are we leaving?

That's the best part . . . we're leaving next week . . . 7 days from today and we're currently in full blown crazy mode trying to get organised.

The trip will run into the middle of July and as soon as we get back I'll be locked in the editing suite in front of the iMac and editing, editing, editing and not allowed out until the film is finished.

Stay tuned - lots more to come!

Our goal is to capture every element of this trip as much as we can both in the South Australian Outback Adventure film and also in blogs, downloads, YouTube videos, email newsletters and social media posts so that you can follow along with us and we'll be building a library of info for you to tap into to help you plan your own trips in the future.

We'll be posting to Instagram, Facebook & Twitter as we go and have Internet access and will upload a couple of sneak peak videos to our YouTube channel when we get back.

Make sure you're following us on one or more of our channels for updates before, during & after the trip.

  1. Sounds great Steve. I wondered what had happened to Project80.
We're in central Australia (obligatory trip to Uluru and Kata Tours) at the moment towing our Australian Off Road Odyssey camper trailer on a 6 month trip through the Flinders Ranges, around Alice Springs then up to the Kimberleys in theme t few days. We came up the Oodnadatta Track and on to Mt Dare then the Binns Track to Alice.
Camping at Muloorina Station and a drive in to Lake Eyre is a must, as is Coward Springs via the Bubbler.
    Enjoy your trip.

  2. Have watched "The Big Lap" several times and look forward to your next DVD. Hope you and the family have an awesome trip and stay safe.

  3. Guys, you cant go wrong with anywhere on this trip but i am from SA and may be biased 😉 For me, Blinman is a beautiful little town and the pub is great, be nice to see this on the final if you go there 🙂 Enjoy and stay safe 🙂

  4. Hey Expeditioners, really looking forward to this. So... when's the next one after that ??? 🙂 Have a blast and stay safe - Peter V.

  5. Love your trips & hope you enjoyed your SA adventures. We have done most of the places you visited too, some great memories, such a beautiful Country we have. We crossed the Simpson desert towing an Australian Off-road Camper, didn't have any dramas, but we only travelled through to just after lunch or when the sand started to get soft so we didn't chew up the tracks... it took us 5 days to do it this way, but was totally worth it & really enjoyable not rushing through. Look forward to seeing your next DVD adventures
