Morris Oz Adventure

We're a family of five. Three young children and young at heart mum and dad. We are travelling in a 4 wheel drive, with a camper trailer. Leaving Melbourne and travelling up through the centre of Oz then down the west coast from July to December 2010.

It is one of those dreams that many Aussies have and we shared. It is our ten year Wedding Anniversary this year and and we wanted to spend it with the kids and do something special. Going bush is more our style than flying overseas and spending a hell of a lot of money, so we decided on now is the time to do our big trip around Oz.
We only made the decision to go about 10 weeks prior to the departure date, so trip preparation had to happen quite fast. All those jobs/modifications to the trailer and car that have been on the ‘to do’ list for a while now had to be done, and I think they all did just in time. With some late nights in the shed (just ask the neighbours) and a lot of ebaying, we did it. Everyone kept asking us where we were going and do we have an itinerary, but we were too busy doing the modifications to spend time on that. We knew we were going up the centre and down the west coast and that was good enough until we hit the road.

We have had our Tambo Camper trailer for Four and a half years and the Toyota land Cruiser for two, so we knew they were trustworthy. Some of the modifications we made for the trip were :

  • Changing the trailer axel and stud pattern to suit the Toyota, so we could share spare tires.
  • Making a box unit for the back of the car to keep things a little more organized.
  • 2inch suspension lift plus poly airbags in the rear.
  • Adding a water pump to the trailer.
  • Electrical system for the trailer, so we can have light with easy.
  • Diff breathers extended.
  • Bike racks designed and welded to trailer, we could not live without them.
  • Fitting a double din GPS unit into the car (what a headache that was, it was cheap)
  • And many more time consuming little bits!!!

We don’t have that much spare room, so choosing things to take was hard. We need a little bit of comfort for it is 6 months, and some activities, for we do like to do our exercise. The kids bikes got the tick, and one adult bike. We thought one of us could run as fast as the littlest could ride, and we could take it in turns. A few books for each of us, and the kids got a few school activity books, diary's and plenty of small games.
The warm jackets which will only be needed for the beginning we are so luck to have, and they can stash away later. The extra sleeping bag if anyone wets their bed is very a must, and a big rug for the top of our bed in the cold weather.

I hope for the next 5-6 months to live a lot more simply. To spend more time with the kids and Simon, and for him to enjoy being with the kids more, before they grow up. Also to see such lovely places that we have in Australia and the kids to experience a different way of life.

We are the hippies in a Land Cruiser.
