Camping Fridge / Freezer Buyers Guide 2019

How to choose the best camping fridge freezer for your trip around Australia

With so many fridge brands, sizes, features and prices, how do you choose the best camping fridge freezer for your road trip around Australia?

Well in an effort to make it easier for you, I've narrowed down the field to 25 models for you to choose from depending on your budget and what you're looking for in a camping fridge freezer.

How the Buyers Guide works

Fridges are sorted into three sections based on capacity - Compact, Medium and Large.

Compact

Up to 32 litres

Medium

32 to 65 litres

Large

65 to 95 litres

Compare 25 of the best camping fridge freezers side by side in a simple and clear format on cards like this:

How we chose the 25 recommended camping fridge freezers in this Buyers Guide

Proven quality brands

This Buyers Guide is aimed at helping you to choose a high quality, durable and great performing camping fridge freezer that would be suitable for long term continuous use, like driving around Australia for a year or two.

This is very different from buying a fridge you'll use once a year for a couple of weeks in the school holidays.

For this reason I haven't included any cheap 'unknown brands' and only focussed on reputable proven brands.

All models of camping fridge freezer I've recommended are from Engel, Waeco, ARB, Bushranger or Evakool which have long proven track records for building great camping fridge freezers and also have extensive service networks so there is help available around the country if you need it.

Must have a freezer

All fridges that I've recommended have a DC compressor and can be run as a freezer. There are no thermoelectric or gas absorption (3 way) fridges on this list. Not that there is anything wrong with these, but they don't have the cooling power of a DC compressor fridge freezer making them unsuitable (in my opinion) for long term trips like The Big Lap.

Why haven't we selected a 'Winner'?

There is no such thing as a 'perfect' camping fridge freezer. Everyone who buys one has different criteria that is important to them.

For example:

  • Physical size & shape - will it fit in my car?
  • Capacity - will it hold enough food and drinks?
  • Single or dual zone - Do I need a dedicated freezer section?
  • Lid design - which way does the lid open?
  • Price - How much money do I want to spend?

And there are plenty more variables.

So rather than pick an overall winner, we prefer to create a shortlist of 25 camping fridge freezers in a range of shapes, sizes, capacities and budgets ALL of which are more than capable of performing well over many years on extended road trips like The Big Lap.

You consider the features and factors that are important to you, compare the various brands and models side by side and their prices and decide which one is best for you.

12 things to consider when choosing a camping fridge freezer

1. How can I reduce my camping fridge freezer's power consumption?

Keeping power consumption as low as possible will help to reduce the drain on your batteries which is especially important when you're camping in one spot for a several days. Unless you have plenty of sun to run your solar panels, or a generator to recharge your batteries, you may find you run out of power to keep your fridge running.

The thicker the fridge walls, the more power efficient it will be so consider this when comparing different models of camping fridge freezer.

More reputable brands with higher quality components will generally be more efficient than cheaper brands.

There are also some factors you can control:

  • Use a Fridge Cover – Most camping fridge freezers have an optional thermal cover that slides over the fridge both protecting it from damage while reducing the power needed to keep it cold.
  • Where you locate your fridge – Keep it in a cool shaded area out of direct sunlight. If mounting in the rear of your car or 4WD, try to park in the shade whenever possible.
  • Keep it full – A full fridge/freezer uses less power than an empty one. Use freezer bricks or water bottles to keep the fridge full when you don't have enough food.
  • Turn it off at night - If you're camping somewhere with cool/cold overnight temperature, you may be able to turn your fridge off overnight without the temperature inside increasing much. Freezer bricks and frozen water bottles will help maintain the temperature.
  • Increase the freezer temperature - Just because your fridge is capable of running to -18°C doesn't mean that you need to have it that cold. If you're just storing meat and veggies short term then a few degrees below zero may be enough and will significantly reduce the amount of power the fridge needs to maintain a very low temperature. (Note - ice cream usually needs at least -15°C to stay solid so skip the ice cream to save power)

2. Is the body of the fridge tough enough to handle rough outback roads?

Most fridges have metal or plastic cases or a combination of both. Brands like Engel with their all metal construction are renowned for their sheer strength and durability whereas fridges with more plastic in their construction will inevitably be less durable. The body of the fridge itself probably won’t break but the UV from the sun can deteriorate plastic and cause it to become brittle or warp.

This can be an issue with lids and hinges.

Some great quality fridges have shiny stainless steel or polished aluminium cases which look beautiful, but consider how good they will look after a year of hard work!

Make sure the case has strong handles for lifting and moving the fridge around and also for to be used as tie down points in the back of your vehicle.

Ideally handles will be removable so they can be replaced or removed altogether if you need to fit the fridge into a tight spot.

Check the hinges and locking catches and ask yourself how they’ll stand up to be opened and closed thousands of times and bumped and knocked from your other gear.

Can you get replacement parts if you need them?

3. Will the fridge fit in your car, 4WD, caravan or camper trailer in the space you have available?

One thing sometimes overlooked is the physical size and shape of the fridge and making sure it will fit into your rig where you need it to.

Make sure you measure up the space including allowing room for the lid to open, and compare this with the models you are looking at.

If you're planning on mounting the fridge on a fridge slide, remember to factor in the extra height of the fridge slide when doing your calculations.

4. How heavy is the camping fridge freezer?

If you’re battling to keep the weight of your vehicle under it's GVM then don’t forget to check the weight of the fridge you plan to buy.

Larger fridges can be over 30kg before you put any food or drinks in them PLUS a heavy duty fridge slide can also be 10kg to 20kg.

We have included the weight of each of the 25 fridge models recommended below to help with your calculations.

5. Does the fridge have good ventilation?

When planning where you’ll mount your fridge, make sure there is plenty of ventilation around the cabinet to allow good heat dissipation. This will make your fridge run more efficiently and use less power.

6. Is there a fridge slide available for your camping fridge freezer?

If you’re mounting your fridge in the back of your 4WD, on the ute tray or in your camper trailer then you might be looking at a fridge slide to enable it to roll in and out.

Fridge slides are usually bolted to the floor so keep this in mind when planning your installation.

Make sure you factor in the size and weight of the fridge slide ensuring it will fit your proposed fridge. Keep in mind they will add a few centimetres to the height of the fridge and the clearance for the lid.

7. Does the fridge come with WIFI or Bluetooth remote control?

Some fridges have WIFI or Bluetooth and smartphone apps to enable you remotely monitor and adjust the temperature of your fridge – very cool!

Check the 'More Information:' section of the fridges we've recommended below to find out if they have the feature.

8. What power sources will the camping fridge freezer run on?

Your fridge will run on 12 or 24 volt power by default and may also have a built in 100 to 240 volt transformer so you can plug it into mains power when you have it available.

If a 100 to 240 volt transformer isn’t built in to the fridge then you’ll need to get yourself a separate one. This will probably come with your fridge or be available as an optional accessory.

9. What sort of power plug connector does the fridge use?

One ‘achilles heel’ of portable fridges is the cigarette lighter socket/plug connection in your car.

These sockets were originally designed for a cigarette lighter and have unfortunately become the default power socket for most 12 volt devices.

The problem is that they use the tension in a spring and friction to hold the plug into the socket and the plug soon works its way out on rough roads.

This results in the fridge either disconnecting altogether or ‘arcing’ where the connection is on/off/on/off constantly. Not great news for the electronics in your fridge to be constantly on and off.

To solve this problem in our car I cut the 12 volt cable that came with the fridge and hard wired it to the cable coming from the car’s second battery to the rear cargo area of the Landcruiser.

Now it is one continuous cable form the battery to the plug that goes directly into the fridge.

Make sure that when you’re mounting your fridge you think about whether the cable will remain connected or if you need to take steps like I did to keep it secure.

10. Does the manufacturer have a good reputation?

Choosing an established and 'known brand' is important when choosing your camping fridge freezer. Especially if you are planning a trip around Australia where you'll be spending a lot of time in remote areas.

Having a reliable fridge to start with is important but also having access to spare parts and a service network is also critical if your fridge needs servicing or repairs.

Cheaper, lesser know 'eBay' brands might be fine for the occasional weekend camping trip but are unlikely to hold up over months or years of continuous use and thousands of kilometres of rough roads.

For this reason, we have only included 5 top brands of camping fridge freezer in this Buyers Guide - Engel, Waeco, ARB, Bushman and Evakool.

We are not saying that all other brands are no good but these five brands are proven over many years and have solid reputations for great performance. We will look to add other brands and models over time as we review this Buyers Guide but only if they meet the same criteria.

11. Is the price within my budget?

Prices for a DC compressor camping fridge freezer range from under $500 to around $2000. Plus you’ll need to factor in accessories like a fridge slide and thermal cover (if not already included).

You get what you pay for in most things and camping fridge freezers are no exception.

Investing the extra dollars in a quality fridge freezer now will pay dividends over the long run.

You'll get a better fridge freezer now that uses less power and, in all likelihood, many years of trouble free use.

This is especially important if you're planning on doing a Big Lap around Australia where you'll be travelling for months or even years and the fridge will be running the entire time.

12. Should I run my fridge freezer as a dedicated freezer only?

If your fridge freezer is not a DUAL ZONE with seperate fridge and freezer sections, consider running your fridge freezer as a dedicated 'freezer only' and then use frozen ice bricks or frozen bottles of water to keep food cool in a seperate ice box.

Each morning you swap the defrosted ice bricks/water bottles with frozen ones and transfer the frozen meat/meals you plan to eat that night into the ice box to defrost slowly. It also has the benefit of keeping your more perishable 'non frozen' food like milk, cheese, fruit & veg cool throughout the day.

This system is ideal on longer trips into more remote areas.
